کتاب The Idiot اثر Fyodor Dostoyevsky نشر ماتThe Idiot is a classic Russian novel that follows Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin, a kind, compassionate, and innocent young man who returns to Russia after years of medical treatment for epilepsy in Switzerland. Because of his honesty, generosity, and sincere concern for others, people often mistake his goodness for foolishness, earning him the nickname “the idiot.”
As Myshkin becomes involved with wealthy families and high society in St. Petersburg, he finds himself caught in a complex web of love, jealousy, greed, and moral conflict. He develops deep feelings for Nastasya Filippovna, a woman haunted by her tragic past, while also forming a close relationship with Aglaya Yepanchin, a young woman from a respected family. Torn between compassion and love, Myshkin struggles to help those around him while remaining true to his values.
Despite his pure intentions, the selfishness, pride, and corruption of society gradually lead to misunderstandings and devastating consequences. Through Myshkins journey, Dostoevsky explores whether genuine goodness can survive in a world driven by ambition, desire, and moral weakness.
